Getting Started in Painting with Bob Ross

If you enjoy Bob Ross like I do or are the least bit interested in getting started in painting using the wet on wet technique, check out this special 1 hour episode of the Joy of Painting with Bob Ross.  (And don’t forget to watch the Bob Ross Experience video here or at the bottom of this post.)

Below are links and recommendations to some of the painting products I use which can help you get started using the Wet-on-Wet oil painting technique that Bob Ross used on his show.

Bob Ross Master Kit –  I highly recommend beginning with this kit as it will really help you get your painting going and you will save some money on basic paints, palette knife and brushes.

Complete List of Bob Ross Brushes and Palette Knives

Complete list of Bob Ross oil paint

Complete list of liquid oil mediums for preparing the canvass.   While this is a complete list of Bob Ross available mediums, Bob mainly applied his signature Liquid White or Magic White to the canvas before painting his landscapes.

Bob Ross 2-in 1 Easel (as seen on the Joy of Painting after Season 27) – This easel is a good deal especially when it’s on sale.  (Note: any easel will probably work to get started but I have found not many easels allow edge to edge painting on the canvas as this one does well.  The Bob Ross 2-in-1 Easel also can be used as a table top easel if you want to paint while sitting at a table.)

Canvases 16″ x 20″ – also a good deal at Michaels when they are on sale or using a 50% off coupon  (Note: Bob used 18″ x 24″ canvases on the Joy of Painting but you can use any size you prefer just make sure they come at least double primed which most are.

Odorless paint thinner

Bob Ross beater rack and paint brush thinner screen

Small bucket with a lid (the size of the brush thinner screen)

Also highly recommended:

Bob Ross large Clear Palette

Baby Wipes at Costco or Dollar tree

Roll of Paper Towels

Larger trash bucket for beater rack

Apron and old pair of clothes you don’t mind getting paint on

some old towels

a place to set your paints and brushes when not using them but within reach while painting

Palette paper or a super cheap palette unless you jump right in and purchase the Bob Ross Palette which I recommend if you want to get serious

Although I am still quite new at this painting thing, I would love your questions or comments so feel free to drop me a note.

(Note: I do not receive any compensation for sharing these links but they are favorite products of mine to aid in getting you started with painting like Bob Ross. )

Is Microsoft a Hate group?

Microsoft embraces sin

Like many liberal organizations, it would appear that Microsoft has bowed to the altar of hate by hating God and loving sin through their blatant backing of the LGBTQI community. On the Microsoft store website they ask, what actions will you take? Throughout the site is various computer related merchandise with the goal to promote LGBTQI sin. (Note: the LGBTQI promoted merchandise and action site has since been removed – see screenshot above)

You might be asking why is this hate? And the simple answer is because Microsoft has chosen to dishonor and hate God Creator of the Universe, His laws but instead love their sin and the sins of others. But they don’t stop there. They go on to promote their hatred of God and love of their sin and the LGBTQI sins by running a campaign about it on their store and website.

Imagine the uproar if Microsoft or Google had embraced God’s holiness and righteousness on their website such as they have with sin.

We are all lawbreakers

It’s important to note that we all have the same desires to sin and have broken God’s law (sinned against a holy God).

Romans 3: 10-18
There is none righteous, no, not one;
There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God.
They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one."
" Their throat is an open tomb; With their tongues they have practiced deceit"; " The poison of asps is under their lips";
" Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness."
" Their feet are swift to shed blood;
Destruction and misery are in their ways;
And the way of peace they have not known."
" There is no fear of God before their eyes."

And spiritually speaking the unregenerate heart is even hostile to God. In fact, that’s the main point of why we are in desperate need of deliverance. God is holy but we are not and cannot enter heaven without a Deliverer. If you haven’t already, check out the good person test and if you are super bold read the book of John in the Bible. You may not have tomorrow.

Do you know what sin is?

What is sin?

What is sin? You might say it’s doing something bad.  However what “bad” might mean to me probably will not be the same for someone with a different worldview.  The statement of sin just meaning something “bad” is too broad to pin down a meaning in practical terms.   But if we can sight specifics about what sin “looks like” and what it is outside of any human standard, there can be no debate.  For this we must look to a power greater than ourselves, namely God.

So what is sin then? Simple put, sin is transgression or the breaking of God’s Moral Law.

The Ten Commandments is the standard God uses to define what is evil (or bad).  It’s not a standard made any human how has imperfections and is fallible.   God’s standard for right and wrong is perfect because God is perfect.

Here’s a quick sample of the “test” God will use to measure the worthiness to enter His presence.  How will you do? (Remember God requires perfection to enter His Kingdom. More on this later)

Always put God first in your life? (1st, 2nd commandments)

Ever lied? (9th commandment)

Stolen something?  (8th commandment)

Hated someone?  God views human hatred as murder. (6th commandment)

Lusted? Jesus said to look with lust is the same as adultery (see Matthew 5:28). (7th commandment)

Ever used God’s name as a cuss word? Hitler’s and Muhammad’s names are not even hated as much to be used as a cuss word.  To use God’s name to express disgust is blasphemy.  (3rd commandment)

What is love?

Before I get back to sin and God’s standard, let’s switch gears for a moment.  It’s probable you have heard much or at least some about God’s love or that Jesus loves you.  You probably have seen the bumpers stickers, shirts, signs, posters, and more with the words God loves you!   But have you ever wondered what that really means and what that actually looks like practically speaking?  We know love can mean different things to different people and especially in a “anything is acceptable” mentality in today’s world becoming increasingly more popular.  For some, love might mean something unnatural, non-traditional or both—think gay marriage.  Perhaps love to you is that great care and concern you have for your child or a friend or parent.  Maybe it’s plain old romantic love, that comes to mind.

But what about the love of God.  Once again we must go outside ourselves and seek the source of love—God Himself.

For this we must see who God is.

I mentioned earlier that sin is when we break the Ten Commandments.  The Ten Commandments aren’t the sin, it’s the breaking of them.  Lying for example.  Adultery, Murder. Not loving God and putting Him first in our life.  A quick look at The Good Person Test shows we have all broken God’s moral law.

God, because He is so holy and perfect, cannot have sin in His presence.  He therefore, because of His very nature or essence being that of holiness, must punish all lawbreakers. Hell exists for lawbreakers/sinners by the way.

And yet God did something beyond human love, even when we all deserve eternal death (also known as judgment in hell).

God made a way of escape from this judgment.  The Creator of the Universe namely Jesus Christ paid the penalty as the perfect sinless sacrifice for us breaking His moral law.  He did this by dying willing for our sins on a cross and taking the full punishment and anger by God put on Himself. Because God hates sin so much, the Bible states that Jesus was crushed for our iniquity/sins.   And then Jesus, because He is God, was raised up from grave after three days proving His earlier claims to be God and defeating eternal death.

The Bible states it like this,

“In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation [acceptable payment or sacrifice] for our sins. (1 John 4:10)

“God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”  (Romans 5:8)

The kind of love which God shows us is as the perfect sinless sacrifice He is ultimately the only salvation for those who repent and put their trust in Him as the Savior.

It’s important to clarify that only two options exist for humanity.  After we die physically each person will enter either eternal life or eternal death.   God in His mercy has lovingly granted us a choice even when what we all should be getting what we deserve—eternal death (judgment in Hell).

When you repent from your sin (turn from it as in changing your mind about committing sin) and trust in Jesus Christ alone to save you from the wrath to come (judgment against sin), you will have eternal life! (John 3:36Titus 3:4-7Ro 6:23)

“When the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared,
not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior,
that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” (Titus 3:4-7)

1 Person You Can Trust

1. Jesus Christ

Jesus is the one person you can trust.  In fact, He is the only one who can provide peace with God and because He is God manifest in the flesh (God incarnate) He could pay (and satisfy) the penalty for our breaking God’s moral law (the Ten Commandments) and is therefore the only One who can save from coming judgment in hell.

Have you seen it? Audacity is a movie you don’t want to miss out on watching

If you haven’t heard about it, there is a great film out that tackles some highly controversial issues within society today.   Without spoiling the movie, a central issue confronted in the movie is homosexuality.  This film does not gloss over the issues involved which I find refreshing especially in a day where being political correct is on so many of our minds.   It also features the best news one can ever know.  You will not want to miss Audacity and please share it with others.

P.S. I recommend watching Audacity in fullscreen mode

Las Vegas Shooter Paddock Didn’t Know or Fear God

sign_1-e1491266704672.jpg

While America is busy attempting to unravel and mentally sort the tragic and horrific shooting massacre that occurred in Las Vegas over the weekend, one fact remains: The Las Vegas shooter didn’t know God. This fact alone is one many people might rather ignore but its reality is undeniable and deeply important.  This may seem like a trivial matter to some but had this man Stephen Paddock believed in God by trusting in Jesus Christ for his salvation he wouldn’t have committed this heinous crime. This goes for anyone, at anytime.  What do I mean you ask?

good_evil

Are we seeking God?

First things first.  When it comes to the most important matter of life, simplicity without compromise is best.

Clearly the world is crumbling and falling apart. People are more and more seeking to break the law and do harm to others.  The Las Vegas shooting demonstrates more of the same.

However, God has spoken a stern warning to all who seek to ignore Him. We have all broken His Law (the Ten Commandments).  As lawbreakers or transgressors of the law we are all slaves of sin (doing evil).  Therefore we are all under a curse.  Sin clouds our minds and blocks our view (or a correct view) of God.  As a result we are self-seeking sin-filled creatures who are at enmity with the God of the universe.  We shoot, murder, lie and cheat.  In the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve, our relationship with God was broken.

Sin is transgressing or breaking God’s law.

The Test

Here’s our biggest problem.  To enter heaven, God demands holiness, perfection and a sinless life.

Have you sinned?

Broken God’s commands?

Are you willing to seek God?

Have you ever lied? (9th commandment)

Stolen? (8th commandment)

Do you put God first in your life?  (1st, 2nd commandments)

Ever used God’s name as a cuss word to express disgust? (3rd commandment)

Hitler and Mohammed are not hated this much.

Lusted? Jesus said lust is the same as adultery of the heart.  (Matthew 5:27-28) (7th commandment)

These are just a few of the Ten Commandments. It’s evident we are all guilty of breaking God’s God’s law, the perfect standard for what is right and wrong.  Therefore since God is holy, perfect and He cannot have sin in His presence (Psa. 5:4, Hab. 1:13) we deserve His righteous judgment in Hell.

Only One Way of Escape

Therefore, we need a Savior–a way of escape from His judgment for sin.   (James 2:10)

Our trying to keep God’s commands to enter Heaven or by doing good deeds is not “good enough” since God as the Judge of Universe and cannot be bribed. Because He’s Judge there is only one way in which God can provide this escape.  He must pay the penalty of our sins Himself.
God has to take our sins away for us to be cleared of wrong doing.
He sent His Son Jesus Christ–God manifest in the flesh–to die on a cross paying the penalty for our breaking His Law (Sin). (Ro. 5:8)
Jesus rose from the dead after three days defeating sin and death (the second death in Hell). (1 Cor. 15:3-4) (Revelation 20:9-15)
When you repent from your sin (turn from it as in changing your mind about committing sin) and trust in Jesus Christ alone to save you from the wrath to come (judgment against sin), you will have eternal life! (John 3:36Titus 3:4-7Ro 6:23)
This is known as becoming born again.
What a great incomprehensible love God has for us when we seek it!  (This is salvation)
“God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”   Romans 5:8

In Summary

1. God is holy and perfect

and He cannot have sin in His presence.

 (Psa. 5:4, Hab. 1:13)

2. We broke God’s Law  (Sinned against God)

God’s perfect standard, (known as the moral law or the Ten Commandments)

Have you ever lied?

Do you always put God first in your life?

Ever used God’s name as a cuss word to express disgust?

(Hitler and Mohammad are not hated this much.)

Lusted? Jesus said lust is the same as adultery of the heart.  (Matthew 5:27-28)

The more detailed test is linked here

3. We deserve God’s Judgment for breaking His Law

because of God’s perfection and holiness we deserve judgment in Hell for breaking His Law. (remember due to God’s holiness and perfection He cannot have sin in his presence)

4.  Good Works Are Not Good Enough

Trying to keep God’s commands or doing good things won’t work with God (God is the Judge – He cannot be bribed)

Only God can provide the way of escape (from His Judgment) since He is the Judge.

5.  We need a Savior–a way of escape from God’s judgment for sin.  (Salvation)  (James 2:10)

God the Father sent His Son Jesus Christ—God manifest in the flesh—to die on a cross paying the penalty for our breaking His Law (Sin). (Ro. 5:8)

Jesus rose from the dead after three days defeating sin and death. (1 Cor. 15:3-4)  Therefore the tomb is now empty.

When you repent from your sin (turn from it as in changing your mind about committing sin) and trust in Jesus Christ alone to save you from the wrath to come (God’s judgment against sin), you will have eternal life! (John 3:36Titus 3:4-7Ro 6:23)

This is what it means to have salvation.

Final Thoughts

Just because Mr. Paddock did not have salvation in Jesus Christ and a relationship with Him doesn’t mean it’s too late for us.  We are all given a limited time on this planet.  You may not have tomorrow or another minute to seek out God.

If you would like a more detailed version of what I have posted about salvation please take the good person test.  Right now Bibles are plentiful in the United States.  (They even have them at Dollar stores!)  Please pick up a Bible and start reading in the book of John (or wherever God is leading you to start reading). Just start in His Word.  When you have questions seek out answers but don’t stop looking in God’s Word.

I am not a pastor (or even part of any church leadership) but a guy with struggles, faults and battles with sin who’s only desire is to point people the right way which is to know Jesus Christ.  If I can be of any help don’t hesitate to ask.

Thank you for reading this important post.

It’s August 21, 2017: “I don’t believe there is a Solar Eclipse”

backyard_eclipse_2017

“I Don’t Believe It”

I wanted to believe the Solar Eclipse of 2017 was real, but I couldn’t see it. Today August 21, 2017 there is expected to be a total eclipse of the sun by the moon but I’m not sure I believe it.  It’s not that I didn’t want to believe either.  I really wanted to see to the eclipse–I even brought my camera so I could show you. The trouble was that where I live the sky was overcast and the air carried a dull orange tint from nearby wild fires. I trust my eyes and I believe what I see. Perhaps you see what you believe. Yet, I scanned the skies in vain seeing only cloudy skies, fog and orange haze. Unless you count the fog, as far as I’m concerned there wasn’t any solar eclipse.

Do You Seek The Truth?

Of course if I should truly doubt the solar eclipse really happened, I don’t have to go far to find the truth.  In fact, according to eyewitness accounts there actually was a solar eclipse.  I even read about it online and saw some videos of what some eyewitnesses described as an “amazing” event. Some people say it was showing the hand of God. While others were simply awestruck.  Should I believe them? I don’t know these people. How do I know these accounts and videos aren’t fabricated or made up? But I still want to know if it’s all true and there is not a good reason not to believe there was actually a solar eclipse.

Many people don’t believe in the God of the Bible. Most often our preconceived worldviews get in the way of believing in Him.  Yet not like believing or not in the existence of an eclipse, many people hate or distrust the God of the Bible. Many of us by nature don’t want to hear what His word says about us.  Maybe you have been hurt by someone who claims to know God or know someone who has been. Perhaps there is great pain or trail in your life that hinders you from believing God.  I have battled things like cancer and depression and know about that kind of pain. Yet none of these things disprove that God is real. In fact it’s just the opposite.

Eyewitness Accounts

There are hundreds of eyewitness accounts and testimonies of the reality of God and who He is.  There are eyewitness accounts of Jesus and who He claims to be. Perhaps you have heard or know someone who has said they would believe in God of the Bible if He would only show Himself to them. The solar Eclipse did not show itself to me. Why should I still believe it was real?  I even went looking for it outside and did not see it with my eyes because there were clouds in the way.  Yet, does that mean it didn’t exist? Of course not. However I have a choice to make. I can choose to believe whether the eyewitness accounts of the actual event are true or not. Similarly, God has revealed Himself to us in His Word. Jesus Himself  has made claims about who He is and any person can freely examine these things to see if they are so. God will not hinder any person from seeking Him, if and when they choose to do so.

I suspect rather, any person who doesn’t believe in God is being hindered by their own selfish desires and lusts.  Simply put, they don’t to find God or God to find them. Sort’ve like a thief doesn’t want to find a police officer. That had been true for me in my life.

“Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near.” Isaiah 55:6

“The Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”  Luke 19:10

“Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” Hebrews 11:6

Are You Seeking God?

You know this, the world is crumbling and falling apart. People more and more seek to break the law and do harm to others.  However, God has spoken a stern warning to all who seek to ignore Him. We have all broken His Law (the Ten Commandments).  As lawbreakers or transgressors of the law we are all slaves of sin (doing evil).  Like the clouds blocking my view of the eclipse, sin blocks our view (or a correct view) of God.  As a result we are self-seeking sin-filled creatures who are at enmity with the God of the universe.

Here’s our biggest problem.  To enter heaven, God demands holiness, perfection and a sinless life.

Have you sinned? Broken God’s commands?  Are you willing to seek God?  To get started, try this quick test.

Have you ever lied? (9th commandment)
